I created this Spiced Persimmon Pomegranate Salad Recipe Sketch depicting the recipe for Spiced Persimmon Pomegranate Salad.
I love design. I love art.
As a full-time web designer, I do more design than art, but I would like to change that.
I’ve been designing and building websites for over 20 years. A large part of my job is solving problems: prioritizing information, leading visitors to information, and organizing a lot of information in ways that makes sense. Design is art… within constraints. It’s problem solving with creativity, and it’s one of the reasons that I love my job. I get to be creative all the time, and sometimes I get to be the hero. 🙂
As an artist, I have less experience. I took art classes in high school, and I’ve always been crafty, but I haven’t practiced much fine art since then. I tried to take art classes in college, but they all seemed to be restricted to art majors only – which I totally disagree with! The process of creating art expands your mind, allows you to explore without constraints, and makes you a more well-rounded person. I think everyone from engineers to philosophers should take an art class or two.
Oddly enough, my recent inspiration to create more art came to me through my full-time job. Our IT organization sponsored a series of professional development sessions on personal effectiveness. I signed up somewhat reluctantly, thinking I was already well-organized in my daily life and work, so what could I possibly learn?
While some parts of the training were remedial, the trainer himself introduced a mind-blowingly simple concept: deliberate practice. He used deliberate practice to get better at travel sketching, and the examples he showed proved it. Deliberate practice is not just about setting aside time to practice an art or a skill – although that is important. It’s a process of practicing a new skill, and reflecting on what you’ve achieved and would like to improve.
In the case of sketching recipes, I have been working on creating more realistic shading, and practicing new lettering styles. With each drawing, I evaluate what worked and what I would like to improve, and practice further from there.
I’m improving as an artist (I hope!) through deliberate practice.
This is my second sketch, for my Spiced Persimmon-Pomegranate Salad recipe.
I hope you enjoy the illustrations!
